TargetRoutineAlignCommit → Execute → Review
(Onto the ‘C’ in the TRACER System)

Your job is no longer to think. It’s to swing.

If you’ve done the first four steps of TRACER correctly, this part should feel… quiet.

You’ve:

  • chosen a smart target and club

  • run a consistent routine

  • aimed and aligned with intention

  • committed to the plan

At this point, thinking is done.

Now it’s time to execute.

Execution Is Not About Trying Harder

This is where golfers get it wrong.

Execution is not:

  • forcing a swing

  • steering the ball

  • striving for perfect mechanics

  • swinging with fear

Execution is simply allowing the swing you already own to show up.
Be an athlete. React… to the lie, to the moment, to the opportunity.

You are not trying to create something new.
You are repeating something familiar.

Why Smart Targets Make Execution Easier

If you’ve done the first 4 steps correctly, this is the unlock:

You do not need a perfect shot. You only need an average one.

If the target is smart — built around your skill level and your miss — then:

  • a slightly thin shot still works

  • a small push stays safe

  • a minor pull doesn’t kill you

Smart targets remove pressure.

They allow you to swing freely because you’re not trying to hit it like Scottie Scheffler.
You’re simply delivering a normal swing to a smart place.

And a by-product of that process… is you’ll be playing like Scottie Scheffler. This is exactly how he approaches golf. Different levels, same process.

Swing To Something — Not Away From Something

This is where all the “don’ts” disappear.

No more:

  • “don’t go left”

  • “don’t miss short”

  • “don’t hit it in the water”

Those thoughts create tension and hesitation. Steering.

We’ve all had that experience… “Dont’ mess up!”… queue the mistakes.

Execution works best when your attention is external and target-oriented:

  • send the ball there

  • start it on that line

  • picture the flight

Your brain performs better when it’s focused on where the ball is going — not what you’re afraid of. Visualization is your friend. Imagine what it looks and feels like to have success.

Less Mechanics. One Key. Go.

This is not the time to rebuild your swing. Tangent has drills and the driving range for that.

If you need a swing thought, pick one:

  • tempo

  • balance

  • finish

  • smooth takeaway

  • full turn

That’s it.

One simple cue gives your brain direction without clutter.
Then you let the motion happen.

Execution thrives on simplicity.

Make Peace With the Outcome

This is the hardest part for most golfers.

You cannot control:

  • the bounce

  • the wind gust

  • the lie

  • a slightly off-center strike

You can control:

  • your focus

  • your intention

  • your commitment to the process

When you truly accept that the outcome is out of your hands, your body relaxes — and your swing improves.

Paradoxically, letting go of results is what produces better ones.

Closing

Execution is not about control.
It’s about trust.

Trust the target.
Trust the routine.
Trust your aim.
Trust your commitment.
Trust the swing you have today.

When you execute this way, golf feels lighter.
Shots feel more honest.
Dispersion tightens.
Confidence grows.

Leave the range on the range. We’ll talk about mechanics and practice in a future newsletter.
