This did not go as planned
I got a chance to play Chambers Bay in a US Am Tour tournament this summer… and let’s just say I got stuck in the dunes. If you’re looking for some funny commentary with some golf lessons sprinkled in… watch this video or follow along in Tangent.
Tracking the Tour
In tracking the tour, we’ll use Tangent to track the stats of a select pro each week. Breaking down what they did well, how they could improve, and how it relates to your game as you work to improve.
If there was one storyline at the 2026 Sony Open that had golf fans doing a double-take, it wasn’t the packed leaderboard — it was seeing 62-year-old Vijay Singh not only tee it up with the next generation of PGA Tour talent, but actually make the cut and finish T40… which is better than Collin Morikawa, Keegan Bradley, and Tony Finau who failed to make the weekend.

Bad AI Image of Vijay dominating… But not far from what happened IRL.
Singh got into the tournament by exercising a special PGA Tour eligibility rule to regain full status for the season. Players who rank inside the top 50 on the all-time career money list (Singh is 6th), are entitled to a one-time exemption that restores full playing rights for a season of their choosing. Singh chose 2026 despite not being on the PGA Tour since 2021.
And he didn’t just show up — he competed. Amid a field full of rising stars and established Tour pros, Singh made the cut at 2-under par and finished at an impressive -5 total.
Singh makes history as one of the few players in PGA Tour history to make a cut in four different decades, a testament to both his longevity and skill.
Course Fit
In case you missed it, we covered the course difficulty using Game Plan mode with the Tangent app on Instagram.
The course sets up particularly well for the 62 year old as distance is mitigated by tight fairways and firm conditions. But… you still have to execute.
How Singh Got It Done
While the Tour is increasingly about horsepower and precision from the tee, Singh’s Sony Open performance stands out. Not just for its rarity, but for what it says about course management, experience under pressure, and adaptability — themes that fit perfectly with what we preach at Tangent.
Tangent shot-level data — from driving accuracy to approach and short game — gives a unique lens to explore how Singh actually scored his way around Waialae compared to his peers.
Vijay lost over 1.1 strokes to an average PGA Tour performance (ranking 67th at the Sony). This is no surprise. It would be incredible if Vijay’s 62 year old body could keep up with the young guns an he certainly gave up some distance off the tee, but he also drove into some troublesome spots as shown in the Tangent driving deep dive.
Still… Vijay’s median distance is solid. While below the tour average, he still moves it.
Vijay’s Strength
There are clear strengths to unpack — his short game performance was significantly better than his driving. He gained over 1.5 strokes around the greens according to Tangent, which was good enough for the 12th best performance in the field.
I highlighted short game as being a key area for separation on a course like Waialae and it seems Singh was paying attention with great shots like this one highlighted in Tangent’s Best Shot’s section of the Player Report.

Vijay’s best shot of the week happened in Round 1. Hole 16 is hole 7 in the tournament setup.
Where Could Vijay Improve
Look… this is really nitpicking a guy who did the unthinkable in competing on the PGA Tour at age 62… but hey… we can all improve.
Vijay lost 1.1 strokes driving and while half of that was distance, the other half was mistakes (hitting into sand, recovery, or penalty situations) off the tee. You can’t be short and inaccurate. That’s a tough combo. So even though Waialae is a narrow course, there is room to improve as only 83% of Vijay’s tee shots found safety.
A Young Man’s Game?
One of my favorite things about golf is that you can play it for a lifetime. Even then, the level at which Vijay is still playing is incredible. He is notorious for his work ethic and workouts. He certainly doesn’t need to prove anything to anyone with his decorated career, so the fact that he has the guts and the motivation keep chasing the tour is impressive.
